NEW PUBLICATION with Kansas City Voices

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

I'm a little belated in getting this news up on my website, but I am happy to announce that I have a piece of prose published in Issue 15 of Kansas City Voices! I received my contributor's copy of the magazine last month and was immediately blown away by how stunning this publication is—a crisp, clean design, countless captivating poems, stories, and essays, and an incredible array of visual arts as well. Needless to say, I am honored to be included within these pages! You can order your copy of Issue 15 via Whispering Prairie Press's website at wppress.org.

About my piece:

"TO THE CHILDREN SPLIT IN TWO" is a piece I've never been quite sure how to classify in regard to genre—I like to simply refer to it as prose most of the time! But in reality, it's fiction. The names and most of the scenarios in this short piece are invented and not about my own life. But as you might (rightly) infer, it is also inspired by my own experiences as a child who grew up with divorced parents.

The style in which this piece was written is inspired by John Steinbeck's intercalary chapters in Grapes of Wrath. I really wanted to capture that feeling of "zooming out" and looking down on a pocket of the world with an uncanny mix of both outside and inside perspective.

Thanks for reading!

XO
